You can escape abuse: Get emergency support

When you are a victim of violence, one of the things you want more than anything is to live in a safe environment once again. It's hard to get out of the situation, though, because any move you make may set off the aggressor once again.

When you have children, it's even more important that you're able to get out of a violent situation. Even if no one has been violent to them yet, studies have shown that people who are abusive may move on to become abusive to their children as well.

How can you escape an abusive relationship?

To start with, understand that abuse is a method of control. The abuser wants to make sure you're reliant on them and controlled in a way that you'll do what they say or want. Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence.

As you should be aware, victims of domestic violence don't ask to be in that position and don't bring violence upon themselves. Violence is just a matter of one person feeling entitled to power and control.

To escape an abusive relationship, you have a few options:

  • Leave the home or area with your children, and contact your attorney and the local police
  • Call a domestic abuse hotline for support
  • Call 911 if violence is occurring or if you're being threatened

You may feel that you don't have options or the support you need to get away from an abusive situation, but you have to take the first step. Your attorney can help you obtain a restraining order or protective order if you reach out.
